So I stuck the nvidia card in my pc as a second card. I didn't want to run my desktop on the nvidia card since radeon works so much better with everything else. I had this game that I played that performed much better on an old nvidia card I had than on my main radeon card. Sorry for the late response, but I've actually done this, and it works for me.

So is this likely to be possible to achieve/worth the effort?Įdit: Also if I did this I would most likely just use the open source Nvidia drivers as I won't be using the weaker card for any games so performance isn't a huge issue so I'd rather keep the closed drivers off my system, although if using the proprietary drivers will make it easier I can still install them. I was also thinking that if in the future I want to set up a VM with GPU passthrough for Windows games I could use the Nvidia card to run my X display server and give the AMD GPU over to Windows. The reason I want to do this is that some software I'm running doesn't seem to play nice with the AMD card I have in there now, but I don't want to swap them out permanently as the AMD card is obviously much more powerful and is able to drive 3 monitors. I've researched this a bit and it seems like most people have had difficulty doing this but they seemed to be trying to either run both both cards concurrently or use an Nvidia for OpenCl while having the AMD card drive their display, so I'm thinking this set up may be easier to achieve. I was wondering if it would be possible to install both GPUs in the same system, and then choose which one to use when I start an X server after boot (with separate config files etc). I have a PC that currently has an AMD RX 550 GPU, as well as an old Nvidia GT 430 that is lying around.
